The rotator cuff is an important collection of muscles which are found around the shoulder joint. They keep the upper arm bone within the socket of the shoulder. Rotator cuffs are crucial for both movement and for structure. Rotator cuff injuries often start with a simple dull ache in the shoulder. As people sleep on that side of the body, the pain will continue to get worse.
It’s very common for athletes (tennis players and baseball especially) or people participating in sports to damage their rotator cuff. Overhead motions can cause problems. However, this also applies to many people during their work. Painters and carpenters are very prone to rotator cuff injuries as well. Risk for rotator cuff injuries increases as a person ages.
