Varicose veins are a common health complaint. At least 20 to 25 million Americans suffer from the condition. In each vein is a small valve that opens to allow blood to return to the heart. Varicose veins form when these valves don’t work properly, allowing blood to pool in the vein. This causes the bulging, bluish appearance so common with varicose veins. Common risk factors include age, sex (females are more affected), heredity and leading a sedentary lifestyle.
Light massage. Massage can increase circulation and decrease swelling and pain in areas of the body impacted by varicose veins. Light, gentle upward strokes should be used in areas where varicose veins are present. Direct pressure on varicose veins should be avoided. Visiting a massage therapist who specializes in lymphatic drainage or circulatory massage may also be beneficial.
