Hand, foot and mouth disease, or HFMD is a common disease of children 10 years old and younger. The symptoms begin in the mouth and throat after a child has come in contact with an infected object such as a toy. Adults can also get this disease, but it is uncommon.

Information. Hand foot and mouth disease is caused by a virus from the family of coxsackieviruses. Coxsackieviruses in turn members of the Enterovirus family. They are RNA viruses, which means their genetic material is one strand of RNA. The specific type of coxsackie virus that causes hand, foot and mouth disease is CVA16. Enterovirus 71 is also a culprit when it comes to hand, foot and mouth disease.
