Diabetes can have quite a few complications. One of them is when the body produces far too many ketones. These ketones lead to a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. The name alone suggests the link between ketones and diabetes.
Causes. The cause of ketoacidosis is well known. The body needs to produce enough insulin in order to break down the sugar that enters it. This insulin regulates blood sugar and gets the energy from it to muscles and tissue cells. When the body doesn’t create enough insulin or uses it incorrectly, it will instead break down the body’s fat for energy. This seems good in concept, but when it does, it releases a type of acid called ketones into a person’s blood and their urine. Excessive ketones cause problems and this condition needs to be corrected as soon as possible.
