5 Important Home Remedies for Leg Cramps

Cramps can send a sudden jolt of pain down your leg or through your foot as the muscle tenses or spasms. Sometimes, cramps can result from overworking your muscles, being dehydrated or having a mineral deficiency. However, the exact cause of leg cramps is not always clear. These contractions are most likely to happen at night and can keep you from getting good rest. If you’re suffering from leg cramps, try these natural remedies.

Epsom salt. If your body is short on magnesium, the deficiency can cause muscle issues, including leg cramps. Epsom salt contains the magnesium that your body needs, and you can absorb it through your skin. To treat leg cramps with Epsom salt, fill the bathtub with warm water. Pour in up to 1 cup of Epsom salt. After the salt has dissolved, sit in the bath for up to 30 minutes. During your soak, perform gentle stretches on your legs and your feet. The stretches may encourage your muscles to loosen. After getting out of the tub, massage your legs and feet to further help your muscles. If you are diabetic, be sure to consult your doctor before beginning an Epsom bath routine. Magnesium oil spray is an alternative way to topically increase your magnesium level.
